Jordan Rakei & Loyle Carner
This edition of the Ninja Tune podcast features two artists closing out one hell of a 2017. Jordan Rakei, who’s soulful LP on Ninja Tune has led to sold out shows and critical acclaim, in conversation with one of the shining lights of UK Hip-Hop, Loyle Carner. We find two friends from opposite ends of the earth sharing their earliest influences, comparing notes on their creative processes and trying to hash out the top 5 MCs of all time. 2018 can only have even bigger things in store for these two artists at the top of their games. Rounding off the podcast, we have new music from across the Ninja Tune label family, including Nabihah Iqbal, The Bug, Young Fathers, Romare and Visionist.
Underrepresentation of women in music is nothing new. Female:Pressure released a report in 2013 that revealed that the average female representation at major music festivals was a dismal 8.4 per cent. However, some booking agencies and collectives are spearheading an effort to rebalance line-ups across the world. This episode of the Ninja Tune podcast finds Emma Burgess-Olson AKA Discwoman & Technicolour Record's UMFANG in conversation with Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, co-founder of Discwoman, a booking agency that exclusively represents cis women, trans women, and genderqueer artists. Together with their roster, their agency is helping to increase inclusivity in dance music whilst putting on exciting & diverse club nights that have seen their profile grow exponentially across the industry. We caught up with them before their September show at Corsica Studios, London.
On this edition of the Ninja Tune podcast we hear from Actress, the man behind the incredible album ‘AZD’, released earlier this year on Ninja Tune. Discussing influences ranging from Solange to The Bellville Three, we hear on topics including politics and gender in electronic music, “chaos magic theory” and going missing in the Congo for 24 hrs. Along the way Actress selects some of the tracks that have influenced his musical path, such as In Crowd’s ‘Back Yard’ and Audrey Hall’s ‘Our Dance Won’t Do’. Finally we hear new music coming from Ninja Tune and our family of labels with tracks from Bicep, Kai Whiston, Nathan Fake, Jordan Rakei and James Heather.
The Bug vs Earth
Like master painters exploring a subject over a lifetime’s work, Kevin Martin and Dylan Carlson – The Bug and Earth, respectively – have each been mining and defining their genres for more than 20 years. On this episode of the Ninja Tune podcast the pair, who today release collaborative album ‘Concrete Desert’ on vinyl, discuss the formative years that shaped their sound and the process of working together. After that, we take a listen to some of the new music coming out on the Ninja Tune family of labels, including tracks from James Heather, Jordan Rakei, Lapalux, UMFANG and new signing Bicep.
Coldcut & Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound)
In this edition of the Ninja Tune Podcast we invite label founders Coldcut and dub pioneer, On-u Sound boss Adrian Sherwood down for a catch up. They discuss early memories and movements of the scene, the history of their labels, and what first drew them towards music. We get to hear a variety of records throughout the podcast, including music from Coldcut x On-U Sound, Singers & Players, Toots and the Maytals, The Fall and lots more. We also hear about their experiences working in the studio alongside Roots Manuva whilst recording new single, “Vitals” from their upcoming collaborative album, “Outside The Echo Chamber” released via Ninja Tune imprint, “Ahead Of Our Time” this May 19th.
